Donuts of Dulce 🍩

I’ve lived in SoCal for five years now. Five years and 2 months to be exact, and I can’t believe I’ve worked in the same place for that long as well, haha! Technically, as a PhD student, but don’t ya worry—I worked my corgi butt off 😆.

In this time, I’ve been able to see so many changes take place at the campus where I work, including the installation of a shopping and dining mecca visited by students, post-docs, faculty, guests, and the general population of LA alike!

My favorites in this little village are Trader Joe’s, and the beloved coffee & donut shop, Cafe Dulce. It is practically mandatory that a visit to CD is an item that must be checked-off by all undergraduates before they leave campus, and I have to admit…it took me a long time to pay my visit to CD. The long lines were always an intimidating factor!

But one day, I made the plunge, and I didn’t regret it! My friend in lab (J.) makes fun of me for my willingness to pay too much for a simple donut and coffee, but in my line of work, treat yo’ self is a mantra to abide by for survival and the maintenance of one’s sanity 😂

And because I found myself visiting CD for a number of mornings over the course of a month, I thought why not try to sample a couple of donuts from their mouth-watering display, and write my opinions on ’em?

That led me to compiling a list featuring…

🍩THE DONUTS OF DULCE🍩

⭐Matcha Green Tea
This babe is quite interesting. At first sight, it looks like any sugar-coated jelly-filled donut, except green and with some seeds in the dough. On the inside, it is PACKED with custard. Needless to say, it was quite a mouthful, and can be hard to eat without napkins or being close to a sink—I’ve had a few experiences where my mouth and fingers were coated with sugar dust, and I was in a mad dash to the restroom sink once I got to my office in lab to prevent anyone from seeing how messy an eater I was!

⭐Vegan PB&J
This donut is my ultimate favorite! The fact that it is vegan is a plus. I’ve had donuts that credited their PB&J name from the fact that a slather of PB was carelessly brushed across the top. Ugh, not my style…this donut however has a juicy, fruity strawberry jam-like filling and is lightly glazed across the top so that a peanut CRUMBLE is situated in place. Sometimes, it’s good to be subtle. I think this one’s my top favorite because there are so many complimentary flavors and textures!

THE BEST!

⭐Chocolate
A simple chocolate donut should be favorite of most, but CD’s version is something that I could…eh, do without 🤷. The chocolate glaze across is much like what you’d expect from a generic donut shop, and the dough seems more flat. The custard filling is random for this donut that would otherwise be a simple offering, and could be left out in my opinion. All I’m saying is, there are so many other 😍 flavors to try from CD, so why choose this one 🤔?

⭐Coffee Crumble
When I want a donut like the Vegan PB&J but am not in the mood for a jam-filling, I go for this flavor! It’s not vegan, but it has a light frosting glaze and carries the essence of a cup of coffee (it is even topped with two espresso beans—so cute!!). Definitely a good choice to pair with a hot black coffee. #CoffeeOnCoffee.

Coffee Crumble

⭐Hazelnut Peanut Crumble
This one wasn’t one of my initial picks, and it was more of a choice based on a “I-really-need-to-take-a-break-from-vegan-pb&j-and-try-something-new” mood. CD offers more than donuts in their baked goods section, including stuffed rolls that have more fillings and are slightly bigger than the donuts. This Hazelnut Peanut Crumble fit this description more than that of a donut. The texture of the roll was definitely crusty, but sweet of course, and the filling was a hazelnut-flavored paste. Overall, it wasn’t something that left me infatuated. Like the chocolate donut, this flavor was something I could do without…

⭐Vegan Coconut
It’s unfortunate that CD only has two vegan donuts in their rotation, but at least they are 😋 ones! The vegan coconut is something I’d recommend if you are a strict vegan and can’t go for the coffee crumble when you need a break from the varied textures and flavors of PB&J 😉. Honestly, this donut is the essence of a zebra who fell into a bucket of glue and a prankster dumped bird feather on him. Aww, poor zebra, but that scenario IS this donut 😹.

Vegan Coconut

TL;DR – get the vegan pb&j donut. u won’t be disappointed.
